Palais Royal sewing box, antique French

This very pretty antique French sewing box was made around 1820-1830 in the shops in the Arcades of the Palais Royal in Paris, where high quality products were made and the nobility of Europe bought their souvenirs from their ' grand Tour'.

The beautifully shaped wooden sewing box made of satin wood, decorated with hammered in metal decorations, a metal handle and small metal ball feet. The work box contains lovely examples of the famous mother of pearl Palais Royal sewing tools. It holds mother of pearl scissors, the famous Palais Royal mother of pearl thimble, a mother of pearl needle case, two pretty snowflake thread winders with gold thread, a stiletto or awl, a bodkin and a glass scent bottle with gilt lid. The scissors, needle case and stiletto are all marked with the enamel pansy as sign of excellent quality. Originally the thimble would have had it as well, but the small enamel plate has come off somewhere in time, leaving a mark where it would have been. The needle case is a replacement of the original which larger case, but has the same model as the original and matches well.

The box still has the original protection cushion in off white silk with ribbon embroidered flower in pink. The pin cushion in the lift-out tray is also embroidered with ribbon embroidered flowers. The lift-out tray itself is lined with off white velvet and the storage space beneath the lift-out tray with off white silk. The mirror in the lid is still in one piece and in good condition. Underneath the lift out tray is room for more sewing items. The box has its original key and the lock is in working order. It measures 7.5" x 4" x 2.75" (19 x 10 x 7 cm).
The set is in very beautiful condition for its age, but of course there are some signs of wear (see also pictures). There is a tiny chip of veneer missing from the front left side of the lid, the needle case is - as said- a replacement of the original and the glass stopper of the perfume bottle can't be removed anymore. Otherwise in remarkably good condition, with the scissors still sharp enough to cut thread. A great addition to any collection!

Palais Royal
This sewing box originates from the shops that were located in the Palais Royal in Paris between ca. 1750 and 1830.
The Palais Royal shops made expensive souvenirs for the well to do visitors of France. Their sewing tools are often considered as the most beautiful handmade sewing tools that were ever made. Most famous are the mother of pearl tools, sometimes marked with an enamel pansy, but very often without. Besides mother of pearl sewing tools you can also find gold and silver Palais Royal sewing tools, all of them mostly originating from a fitted sewing box or etui.

Items with a value of 35-60 euro or a weight over 2 kg will be shipped with track and trace. Items with a value more than 65 euro will be shipped signed for with track and tracel.

Of all items you'll find the postage charges in the shipping section of each individual product listing. The shipping costs will vary due to the differences in size and weight of the item.
